Our
Story
The North Eastern Basketball Association was formed on 15 March 1951 at a public
meeting held in the supper room of the Derby Town Hall. The meeting was convened by the Legerwood Basketball Club. In the inaugural 1951 season, there were 5 affiliated clubs – Legerwood, Branxholm, Derby, Winnaleah & Pioneer. In 1952, Ringarooma was admitted to the Association.
In 1971 the North East Women’s Basketball Association was renamed to what it is today, the North Eastern Netball Association, with women’s basketball officially becoming known as netball in 1970. The Pioneer club played their final season with the Association in 1978.
Scottsdale joined the Association in 1984, with Bridport in 1991. Founding club Legerwood wound up in 1997, with existing players forming Central Swifts who participated in the Association for the first time in 1998.
Today, there are 6 affiliated Clubs with NENA – Bridport, Central Swifts, Derby, Ringarooma, Scottsdale and Winnaleah, with netball played at various locations around Dorset, and in 2021, celebrated NENAs 70th Anniversary.
